HomeBoy - I have asked a mod to see if they can start your own thread for you. If they can, you will get better advice.

Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • Sounds same as our experience but i didn't find this thread until later. In short, we so far only have verbal advice of the specifics of the debt, I asked them to send written details, will then respond with "prove it". I'll have more to report soon, I think.

    Hopefully not...

Make sure the prove-it letter you use has the requirement to communicate by letter only. Most prove-it letters say "in writing" - I think this allows text messages, it certainly allows emails.

And I find text messages about anything official offensive. Texts are for mates and family... Not debts.
  • I have had 3 letters from SRJ and each time ignored them until the last one came through yesterday. The letter was in my name, sent to my mothers address (I haven't lived there for 14 years and certainly never paid any of the household bills), quoting my home address and that I owed the money to British Gas for a prepayment electricity meter.

I contacted British Gas regarding this stating I had had this letter and that I didn't understand it as it had been sent to my mothers home address, etc and that I have credit meters not pre payment. After being on the phone for nearly an hour they confirmed that the account number they have and the one on the letter were not matching up. They told me I had no debt on my account, all up to date on my monthly direct debits and if I had debt they would contact me first with corresponding letters.

Their advice was to ignore the letter, send a copy to them and at no point make any kind of payment to them at all.

Never sign any letter to a debt collector with a signature that can be copied and used to verify yours.

    Good advice !
    Be happy...;)

"1. I have no knowledge of any outstanding debt."

Always amazes me how people seem to forget about their debts.
Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.

Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j
  • ampafc, I think you're being unfair; SRJ are notorious for contacting people regarding debts they never had. They almost make BCW look semi-professional.
  • If I was seeking to appoint anyone to recover my Debts, I wouldn't use this company.

First they left me a pre-recorded message asking me to call 0845 3137285 (a premium number at my expense of course) quoting a reference number.

Then they called me the next day with a pre-recorded message asking me to call them back on 0844 3585862 (another premium number at my expense of course), without any information as to who they were, or what they wanted.

I had a run-in with them last year, and I told them then that the person they apparently wanted didn't live at this address, because my landline phone had been re-allocated to my address by Virgin Media over 3 years ago from a location some 10 miles away.

    Like a previous correspondent,
    1. They don't say who they are looking for
    2. They don't say what the debt is for
    3. They don't say how much this debt is

If they were truly seeking a Debtor, would they rely on leaving messages and asking the Debtor to call them back on a premium number? I don't think any Debtor would bother doing that.

I've reported them (again) to the Information Commissioner.
