New job pays less than advertised

firstly sorry if this question has been asked before, seen some similar questions but they didn't quite answer my query.
I applied for a job advertised at £12 per hr, I fully met the person spec and was offered the job today but the the confirmation email says £10 per hour.
At the telephone interview the salary was discussed and agreed at £12 p h and I have the original advert saying the same. The job is a short term 12wk contract on the company payroll, holiday accrual, nat Ins etc.
Can they do this?

Have you confirmed that the £10p.h rate in the email is correct? it could be a mistake."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Its called trying it on.
You get a £12 an hour candidate, offer them the carrot then make it awkward to refuse.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I am waiting for their reply, just wondered if they can actually do this, if I hold out for the £12 per hr and they withdraw the offer can I do any thing about it?0

apparently they were 'pushed on our tender price so we have had to adjust the rates across the board including reducing our profit margin'
Still doesn't seem right to me, have taken the job but anyone actually know the legalities?0 -
it's a job via an agency?gullydwarf wrote: »apparently they were 'pushed on our tender price so we have had to adjust the rates across the board including reducing our profit margin'

No, not an agency job, a consultancy which is hiring extra staff for a contract they won0

At a guess it legal to advertise anything as long as you are not mislead when you are offered the role. Meaning they can't say the rate is £12 and pay you £10 but they could advertise £12 and offer £10, get me.gullydwarf wrote: »No, not an agency job, a consultancy which is hiring extra staff for a contract they won0 -
I've seen a few similar threads on here and the general feeling seems to be that it's underhand but not illegal - they have offered a rate of pay, you are free to accept or decline it. To my mind if they can't give a good reason why you should be paid less than the rate that was advertised it could be taken as a warning either that the company is having financial troubles or they are not great to work for.0

Was in a very similar situation to OP a couple of years ago, but they had the reduced pay in the contract in the hope I wouldn't notice/was in too deep at that point and wouldn't walk away.
Its all very underhand and gives a bad impression of the company
It very well could be an indication of what kind of employers they are....but as its for 12 wks OP most would be willing to take the risk....Its up to you, of course you may feel your time is worth more than £10/hr-no-one would blame you for that. Thanks to all posters for your never ending help and support:beer:0
