In depth look at the housing market

Each of those properties has someone living in it, when it's sold, someone else will be living in it. Net result of property available to those without a property = 0.
I see, thankyou. Not all of the properties have people living in them though as many are empty. I wonder what percentage of the empty homes registered in 2011 are for sale.0 -

I guess the people who live in these properties are going buy a tent and live a field.
Last year we were one of the statistics on RM as our house was for sale, as was the house we eventually bought. Most people selling their house move into another house - either by buying one or renting one.0 -

House price growth halts as demand falls
Data from the Hometrack monthly housing survey show that price growth halted last month after three consecutive months of price rises. The supply of homes for sales continued to grow, according to the property analyst, while demand fell by 0.5 per cent compared with May 2012.0 -

We moved to a village in Lincolnshire last year when sold our house in the south east - it's not a bad sized village but it has no bus service.
I've had a look on RM at the properties for sale to see how many are empty and there are 5. And some of those will definitely be on the empty homes list, they are probate sales. And some of them need a lot of work to bring them to current standards.
One of them belonged to a retired doctor - who was the village doctor for years - he died last year and the house is up for sale now. Part of it used to be used as his surgery before he retired.
The other reason - around here anyway - is that property is cheap (compared to where we left) and some people can afford to put their house up for sale and then leave it empty when they move to a new house.
We also have a fairly near neighbour whose property may or may not be on the empty homes list - they spend half the year abroad - so the house is technically empty. But it is lived in - just not all of the time.0 -
I don't suppose anyone has any data for total houses purchased in a year going back 20 or 30 years.. cheers0

No. But one fact I do know if that in the past on average houses changed hands every 7 years whereas in the boom years it reduced to every 4.
So expect activity to remain at subdued levels. As its perfectly normal.0 -

It would be normal, if they changed hands every 7 years.
At the moment they're changing hands every 25 years, so it's very abnormal.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
