Claiming Tax Back

in Cutting tax
I recently contacted HMRC about claiming tax back because i had recieved a check for about £40 for 2007/08...nothing for years since.
Because i notified them about a change of address at that time, they now want my request for tax back calculations in writing.
Any ideas what i need to write? (How is this better for either party? Or is it for Data Protection?)
Ive worked like 6-8 months of the year for 3 out of the last 5 years and paid considerable tax every month, pretty sure im owed a large sum back.

You dont automatically get tax back each year.
It depends on what your earning were in the months that you worked and any other income that you had in the months ie JSA, within that tax year.
Give us some figures and we may be able to help.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Just to clarify. Did you give them the change of address when you asked about the repayment for later years? If so, you're right it's a Data Protection move.0

Just wondered why they started with 07/08 before the end of the financial year then didn't follow up with anything.
An example would be that i worked say, 7 months earning £9000 a month paying probably £100 tax a month for 7 months, then i did JSA for about 2 months or so, and didn't have anything for 2 months.
This is typically how i spent about 3 years. At the time the threshold was £6,470 i think, which i certainly didnt earn. I was 19-22 at Mcdonalds and stuff!0 -

Correct. I suspected as much, but the person on the phone didnt advise me, he just said it would be 10 working days for the department he was passing the information on to, to contact me. I'm entirely sure knowing the situation, he would and should have known to tell me about the need for a request in writing. Either way, this was about 2 months ago and i still havent done it!0 -
In which case, your letter can be really short. Just...
show your name, National Insurance Number and address.
Explain that you've received a refund for 07-08 but nothing for years after this.
All you need is to ask them to review 08-09 to 2011-12.
In order to avoid any delay I'd also recommend adding a summary of the jobs you had, with approx dates. This isnt essential but it would help to explain any gaps in your employment history.0 -
I presume you mean £900 a month, not £9000.
If you earned £900 a month for 7 months and then JSA for 2 months it would be pretty close to the threshold so dont expect too much back.
Do you have any idea how much you actually earned per year. No p60s p45s.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
