They wanted me to do key skills in maths (I do finance) and it took me several weeks to convince them that my (A*) at GCSE maths and my grade (A) A Level in maths was more than sufficient, but that's just the way these places are. I didn't fit the mould, and they didn't know what to do with me.
This reminds me of a story a friend told me. She was working admin for a company who were employing new staff. It was her job to sort through the CV/applications to figure out who was suitable to be short listed. They'd asked for c or above in GCSE maths. One unfortunate candidate had written down their 'A' at A-Level Math and their First degree in Math thinking that was enough to clearly demonstrate they had the skills. My friends boss told her not to short list them because they hadn't written down their GCSE in it.
It just demonstrates a very narrow minded approach a lot of companies are taking on in the UK.I think a lot of managers are prejudice against educated individuals in certain instances.

Really? Because a lot of employment advice states not to put basic qualifications on your cv if you have higher ones. Now I am confused as which is best to do. I am sure MOST employers would know that to get into A level you generally need a good GCSE.

or being pedantic in insisting that they they write what they got at GCSE, even if they failed but later got better marks and applied and successfully completed A Levels.

We have someone who did a degree in maths, and although he successfully passed it, we cannot accept his qualification, he still has to functional skills maths.

Play it safe, put them all down. I've worked at a few places where I've heard the same kind of stories. People know it, but when they have a 100 applicants they're justing looking for any excuse to thin the pile.
