P45

Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

I had two jobs with the same employer but I have recently left one job and have a job with a different employer (hence have two employers now).

Do I get a P45 for the job I left even though I am still employed by the same employers but have a different job?

My new employers are charging me high tax as I did not supply them with a P45.

  • I wouldn't expect to get a P45 from employer no. 1.

    If you can't supply a P45 to employer no. 2, you should complete a P46 and tick the box for having another job.

    You may need to split or transfer your personal allowance, depending on how much you earn for each job.

    I would say it depends how you were paid. If you recieved a payslip for each job and each payslip had a tax code allocated to it then I would have expected a P45 to be issued.

    No, the P60 is only for your records.

    In that case I wouldn't expect a P45 to be issued. You should complete a p46 for your new employers and tick Box C to say you have another job.
  • I am not sure that anyone can really help without more information: there have not been many cases on MSE of people with a double employment that I can recall. It might mislead your new employer if you can only pass on half of the figures!

    For the two jobs, were you treated as one employee who happened to split their time between two tasks, or were you treated as two separate employees - perhaps on different rates?

    Then I would say you will not get a P45, as has been said ask for a P46 and if earnings on your old job are not fully using your tax allowance contact the tax office regarding splitting your code between employers.

    You are probably being taxed on an OT tax code which will mean no personal allowance on this job. Depending on the amount you earn with Employer 1 it may well be correct anyway - ie if you earn over £8105 with Employer 1, then you are paying the correct tax with Employer 2.

    What do you earn with Employer 1 now?

    Please also confirm if Employer 2 asked you to complete a P46 and if so what box did you tick? I would have expected Employer 2 to have given you a P46 if you have told them you have another job.

    Please also confirm the tax code used by Employer 2 - is OT or BR?
  • Well, we are getting somewhere now! You say that your new employer is charging you "high tax". Is the code on your new payslip BR?

    Again, we can't tell if the new tax code is correct or not without knowing how much you earn at the old job - at least whether or not this covers your personal allowance.
