As a mum to 2 children who did not return to her 'old' job after maternity leave, I am looking for some weekend work to help me maintain my sanity a bit.
I have my CV and have found a couple of part time jobs in local shops but no idea what to put in the covering letter/e-mail that accompanies it.
Do I be honest about what I am looking for or not?
Any help gladly appreciated.

You've already said it in your own post.
Tell them why you want the job - you are looking to return to work after having children
And you would be great for the role because of your previous experiences......etc ...and mention that your local, flexible, good team player, understand the importance of good customer service. You could even bring in your experience as a parent and consumer. How you appreciate good value, quality, that sort of thing. There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0 -
Good at organisation too? Having children you need to be able to plan and organise your time. Getting them washed dressed fed and ready for the day etc.0

I would say the example gave on here as 'good' is too detailed. Most managers are busy and don't want to have to read a letter that long, as well as a CV. When I have recruited for staff I have looked for something that has correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. The details I need to select a candidate should be in the CV, not in the letter. The letter should be a formality to introduce the candidate, give availability for both employment and interviews.0 -

I have to agree with this, especially if you've got 100s to churn through.
I would say try and aim for a mid way point of the two letters shown in the link.Dear xxxxxx

I look forward to hearing from you.
