Dentist - Invisalign

Hi,
Anyone had this? I'm 27 years old, my teeth are okay but I have fangs, not high up on the gum, but pointy teeth, it would only require minor treatment. I have heard about invisalign? has anyone had this done? It's basically invisible braces, I don't want to wear the old metal ones for a few years. I realise this will cost a few k. anyone had any experiences?

Invisalign has it's uses but different brace systems move teeth in different ways and not all are suitable for every problem.

Have a consultation with an orthodontist who uses a variety of systems and can advise you on the best for you, not a dentist who only provides invisalign . Expect to pay for a consultation and then you can budget and decide what you want to do.

I tried invisalign on the recommendation of a dentist. Halfway through treatment the aligners didn't fit because my teeth didn't move quite as invisalign predicted. The dentist negotiated with them for months to make new aligners but although they agreed to do it they didn't get round to it. I ended up giving up, going to an orthodontist who used a combo of an Inman aligner and some clear plastic braces like invisalign for a fraction of the cost but was annoyed because he thought the invisalign model had required my dentist to file down too much space between my teeth which didn't close up.

In short, there are other invisible options to move teeth which may be quicker, cheaper and better than invisalign or at least made in the UK so more responsive to problems. If I were making the decision again I'd have got advice from someone who offers a range of solutions at the outset just as brookjack says.

If your teeth are pointy, wouldn't they be pointy no matter how you move them? I have fangs and i had a train track. They look better but still a bit fangy!

I have fangs and i also have invisalign, invisalign won't stop them being pointy, unless you need braces for out of line teeth. I paid £1700 for my invisalign.

  • Hi
yes they wont be pointy if straightened, but at least then they can be covered with a veneer and not look to weird. The fang teeth are pushing the ones next to them inwards and also making my 2 front teeth weird

It is possible just to reshape a tooth by taking off a little enamel. (After the orthodontics). There is not always a need to whack a bit of porcelain onto it afterwards.

If you just have a tooth reshaped - then nothing else will ever need doing to it. If a veneer is fitted, then this will need replacing every few years as it deteriorates.

Obviously, I haven't seen you and have no idea if this is suitable for you - but you might want to ask your dentist about the possibility of simply reshaping the tooth. It's far cheaper in the short and long term, and can give excellent results if done well. (If it's possible)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

The laboratory charges for invisalign have gone up massively recently and vary according to whether you are having top and lower teeth done and how many retainers they calculate you will need and length of time it will take.

Many other brace systems are available, invisalign is an expensive way of treating crooked teeth and is not always the best choice for many tooth reallignments.

Make sure you see an orthodontist who uses many systems and can tell you which is best for your problems, don't just see a dentist who offers only one system.

Never choose any medical or dental treatment on the basis of price alone. Ask your general dentist who they refer to for orthodontics.
  • As our resident dentists have suggested you need a proper assessment of your problem and how best to address it.

My wife had a very good experience of Invisalign but as has been commented it is not cheap. It does not work overnight and does require complete commitment from the onset. My wifes teeth are now perfect but as a precaution to any retrograde movement she still wears a subtle removable guard at night.

Actually retainers have to be worn for life. Sometimes wire will be cemented on to the back of teeth as well as wearing retainers.

These will wear out but any dentist should be able to make new retainers. Cost of a retainer varies on type but a simple "pull down" will cost circa £75.

Invisalign treatments are particularly prone to relapse if retainers are not worn as prescribed.
