Part-Time Work For Students

Just how does my son find himself a part time job? He's just home from uni, has applied for lots of jobs and yet had no replies, or if he does get a reply, they've no vacancies. He sent out CVs everywhere. He walked around the local industrial estate handing in his CV on the off-chance there might be a job somewhere. He's checked all the websites for the supermarkets, chain stores etc and sent them all CVs too.

He just doesn't want to be sat at home doing nothing all summer and he's home now until the start of October.

We live in Halifax, West Yorkshire area.

Can anyone help or offer any advice?

Thanks,
Sal

I think employers can be put off of students because by the time they have recruited and trained them up, they have to leave to go back to Uni and then they have to recruit again.

When I was a student (over 10 years ago), I commuted home at weekends to work, so this wasn't really an issue for me, but I know that my friends did struggle to find temporary work.

Maybe your son could try asking neighbours if they need any work doing like washing cars, babysitting, mowing the lawn.....

    Wish him luck.

Fruit picking? or is he a job snob uni type? No-one is above a bit of graft.

Accommodation is provided there, just get yourself a train ticket and a toothbrush.

Nope, not at all, he's quite happy to do anything if the work is there.

    Thanks for the link.

Too late for this year but next year, make sure he starts applying from Easter, rather than waiting until he comes home in the summer.

I echo what Dunroamin says, also consider supermarkets/high street shops where he could continue working part time during the term in a branch close to Uni.

Has he signed up at all local temping agencies? My student DS was offered work within hours of signing on at one local to us :D

If he's OK with some lugging and repetitive work have him pop in to local colleges. The usual needs this time of year lie in IT support (equipment refresh for the new academic year) and MIS/Enroment to prepare for the new intake of students about to land on their doorstep.

We only had 2 requirements for temp workers over summer, could they walk? could they walk and carry things? If the answer to both was 'yes' they were in.

I was going to suggest this. I would love a permanent part-time job but they are like gold dust where I live. Out of the blue last week I was rang by an agency (that I wasn't registered with but who had found my CV on-line) and asked to work f-time for the next 3 weeks to cover hols. Try more than 1 agency though, another rang me up around Easter, asked me to go in and see them and then they've not come up with anything!
