Can you cash a cheque that's a couple of years old?

A quick query for all you experts out there :D
I think that I have a cheque from a previous job squirreled away somewhere in the house. Problem is, it will be a couple of years old, will I still be able to bank it - providing I manage to find it in the first place? TIA

  • Nope, sorry but afraid they have to be drawn within 6 months from the date they were issued.

You could try getting it re-issued but may struggle after this length of time.

  • As above - 6 month rule :(
  • The company that issued it should have picked this up and contacted you when their books didn't balance. Are they still in existence?

Carp - I thought that might be the case. If I find the cheque I'll give the company a call and see if it can be reissued - worth a try anyway.....

A couple of years ago I banked some cheques that were approaching the six month limit (they had been lost and found). As I was chatting to the cashier I mentioned that is was a good job we found them before they hit the six months and she said that the six month rule wasn't actually a rule at all and cheques can be banked after that time.

No idea if things have changed since then, or whether she was even correct, but that's what I was told.

Useful to know - I'll definitely need to find it and see how I get on

I think it may depend on the company. I banked a cheque rebate from a phone company and a premium bond win after 14 months and both went through OK.

The cashier said it was worth a try and if not I could write to the company so I noted the details from both cheques before handing them over

I thought Premium Bond cheques had printed on them that they were not valid after 3 months?
