For what it is worth - I would not have resigned. You gave the company the easy way out.
Once in a previous job I stood up to a client who had required me to work very long days. On the second day I informed everyone that I would not be able to work longer than a 12 hour day as I had committments after work. this was all accepted until it came to the crunch, when I said I was off.

All hell broke loose, client swore at me, said she would never work with the company again. Basically I said sorry about that but I am going home, and I did.

The next day I was hauled over the coals by my immediate manager, then his boss, and then THE boss, who all asked what the hell I thought I had been doing.
I replied if what I had done, went against my contract or had I broken some rules.
When I was told that I was within my rights do do what I had done that kind of weakened any argument they had.

The client never ever did work with us again, took her money elsewhere, but the conditions of our employment were then explained to every client very clearly from then on and life generally improved a little bit for the staff.

    Boss still hates me though.
We all evolve - get on with it

Even when you're sober you don't seem to have heard of paragraphs

    Who said I'm sober? :D:p

Yeah, paragraphs, i use them in essays, but i am a little forgetful when it comes to including them on postings on forums, I'll grow out of it once i'm doing my dissertation and all i'll be doing is typing with proper paragraphing.

To be fair, I think there have been useful bits of advice in the posts but when one is feeling sensitive about a situation it is easy to pick up on the petty and negative!

I have noted the positive responses, I just hadn't checked this thread in a long time to reply to them all and only stumbled back upon it today but i am appreciative of the positive and advice based responses and have clicked the relevant thanks buttons

You make a fair point, one i agree with really but at the time i was a bit naive and believed that there would be terrible repercussions if i had that i'd been sacked for refusing to carry out a manager's lawful instructions, which can be classed as gross misconduct, on my employment history. As people have suggested on here the significance of this 6 month part time job in my career is minute and in fact may not need mentioning but i was clearly thinking (or not for that matter) differently at the time.

Simple and the truth. No one will care or want to delve into that story which you most definately better off not telling a prospective employer.
