Gross misconduct

Hi was just looking for some advice. I was working with a bank and had access to a system for online banking. What I didn't realise that the system I was using to check my bank account was not allowed to be used for online banking, and each colleague should app,ly like a customer for this access. I transferred money to my other bank account about 4 times and this showed up on an audit. Because this system allows us to refund fees for customers, it is apparently a breach of contract to use it for personal use. I genuinely had no idea. I have no been suspended and am waiting on the results of the investigation. Does anyone have any idea of the likely outcome of this? I'm so scared I will be dismissed and I could kick myself because it was so innocent. Thanks

  • I would expect dismissal. Misuse of IT systems is taken very seriously by banks. Did you not read the IT policy? How long have you worked there?

    grovel.

this was foolish at best, all you can do is grovel and hope you get a final warning

I think the issue is why didn't you know. Do they have clear policies on this? Does everyone else know? If so why didn't you?

If you can show that you genuinely did not know (and not because you simply didn't read/pay attention to what you were told) then I would expect that to be enough if apologise and say you won't do it again.

How long have you been there?

  • I've been there for 11 months. I just am so confused. I understand now why I shouldn't have done it but it's not like I was transacting from other peoples accounts. We're allowed to monitor our accounts and look at transactions but not move anything

Not understanding, or disagreeing with, the rule doesn't help your case I'm afraid.

I don't agree with the 'rule' that says I mustn't drive faster than 70mph on the motorway even if there are perfect conditions and there is no other car in sight. That doesn't make it legal for me to do so.

Luckily you're dealing with an employer, not the law. Your best bet is to grovel. A lot.

    Good luck.

At eleven months you have few rights - I agree that the best you can do is grovel, but expect the worst.
