Need mattress for child's first bed

Am going to be moving my 2 year old son into a single bed in the next couple of weeks.
He's spent a lot of time sleeping in our bed (firm sprung mattress) and a bit less sleeping in his cot (another firm sprung mattress).
Have spent a lot on the bed, so don't want to go mad with the mattress, but also want something that will last him a long time. It's probably been 10 years since I last bought a mattress, so I'm not sure where to start.
Don't want memory foam or latex. Understand pocket sprung is better than open springs?
Budget is probably about £150 or so.
Any ideas?

Your right pocket springs are much better then open coil, but that's usually for adult weight, as a 2 year old doesn't weigh very much I would stick to a cheapish open coil around the £100 mark.
Then get past the potty training and trampoling age, then purchase a better quality mattress for when he's heavier.
I would also go for a gentle mattress, again because lack of body weight. Babies are advised to have a firmer surface when young so the risk of suffocation is reduced in case they end up on their bellies.
My 5 year old is on a £99 mattress and won't be getting him a pocket sprung one until he's about 10.
If you don't won't to go the route of getting 2 mattresses, then yes you should be able to get a pocket sprung matt for around £150 ish. Go for 1 that has 1000 springs (spring count will be for a king size mattress), make sure that's it turnable. If you turn it EVERY month and he doesn't use it as a trampoline then it may last until his teenage years.
The other factor is how often an adult will sit on the bed, bed time stories etc..... As sitting on mattresses really does kill them, they are designed to be lead (spelling) on. Again if so then cheap matt now and replace later.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -

Thanks for the advice. Any specific mattresses you'd recommend? Argos seem to have a lot, but I don't know if any of them are any good for the money.Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Yeap this one. Although I feel it may be in their next sale some how. What a joke £999 for a single mattress. Proves may point about sales being gimmicks.
Back to your question, Argos have a habit of getting their mattresses "Speced" for them, they take the suppliers normal catalogue range, downshift the spec and then stick they own name on it.
So I'm not familiar with any of there ranges.
I have more time tomorrow and I'll suggest a few.
Are you after cheaper matt for now or would you still prefer a pocket mattresses?
What's the mattress going on, Solid divan, solid slats, sprung slats etc?Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -

Nah, not bothered about pocket sprung for him now. He's obsessed with bouncing on the bed as it is.
It's solid slats on the bed. We actually still have a single mattress for emergencies here - but as it was mine about 25 years ago I don't think I'll put him on that!
He's used to a very firm mattress, so probably a firm open coil would be best. Grateful for any suggestions you can give tomorrow. You're a star. :j:jScience adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Don't know if you want a branded model? Argos? Online? etc...
But heres a few that I'd be happy with my son sleeping on.

Many thanks Pinky - definitely best to give me a limited choice to choose from!! Probably happiest ordering online.
Gut instinct is to discard the non-turn one and the buttoned one. How firm is a medium mattress? I've only ever bought firm ones - anything less would feel awful to me!!Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Your welcome.
Who knows how firm, medium is, that's the trouble with this game, there is no industry standard for firmness. Plus it would be a knightmare to measure.
Bear in mind that the mattress is for a child with very little body weight they would all feel quite firm to him.
It's more about getting decent value for money at this stage and worry about firmness later when purchasing a better quality mattress.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Quite tempted by this one http://store.makro.co.uk/p-10013-silentnight-regal-supreme-mattress-single.aspx
Saw it/lay on it/LO bounced on it this afternoon.
Any thoughts?Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Seems ok, maybe 20-30 pounds over priced, but then you PAY for brands due to their massive over heads.
As a comparison you'll get a pocket sprung matt for £150 ishHelping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0
