No don't do it over the phone. Do it in person. I did it in person and the adviser didn't close the claim properly. long story short I ended up being interviewed under caution for Benefit Fraud. I managed to demonstrate to them beyond a reasonable doubt that I was not intending to defraud them, because of some fairly unique personal circumstances. However were it not for some happy coincidences I would have been facing prosecution because even though I closed the claim in person I didnt take a copy of the signed closure form I signed.
Moral of the story. Don't close claim over phone close it in person. Take a copy of the closure form you sign. Keep it safe for 6-12 months.0 -
Congrats on the job.
If I were you I would only sign off when you have your contacted start date in Black and White and take a copy of it to the Job Center. Therefore you have covered all angles if your claim doesn't get closed correctly.
P.s don't forget to get a copy of your closure form. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
Hello again.
I had a long chat on the phone yesterday with one of the managers to discuss my placements (they have several sites and I could be working in any of them, which is fine).
I confirmed the start time with HR yesterday by email and now I think they are drafting the offer letter with the start date in it. Once I get that, I will take it to the JC. Mine is 5 min away from our flat so is not a problem to go in person. My advisor is a really nice guy so I am sure it will be ok.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the closure form, I'll make sure is in my hands and kept safe!! When I opened my claim on-line, it didn't go through properly and I had to do it all over the phone: it got me delayed by two weeks, but at least they backdated it...
Thanks a lot for your advice- I can't wait to close the claim and start afresh- it's really exciting, after such a terrible 18 months of going through the redundancy stuff and subsequent unemployment...

I just signed the book and dated it and handed it to the JSA reception guy the day before starting the new job.
That's what it's there for. Use it - the day before you start.
No need to do anything else.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
