defaults and credit file

Hi

I know defaults stay on your file for 6 years - after this time do they drop off, even if unpaid? We're on a DMP and have been for 3years...we probably defaulted before this but not sure. We should be able to pay them off in another 3 years so i was wondering if our credit files would then be repaired? Is there any benefit to us in terms of our credit score if we pay off earlier than that or is the fact there's a default enough?

They drop off after 6 years from default, unless they get a CCJ which will stay on for 6 years from the date awarded. You should know if this happens if they have your correct address.

Why not check your credit file with Experian? Either free trial then cancel or pay the £2 for the statutory report. It will list default dates.
