May I suggest you take a look at the

Endowment update thread .


You will see oin the chart that there are plenty of endowments that are well below half of their peak value.

I'm afraid your comments are very misleading.

absolutebounder, what happens in a market fall is the with profits policy reducing or eliminating the terminal bonus that provides most of the market-related return. The with profits policy doesn't isolate you from the market either, even though some of its return is protected.

In the ISA you can reasonably protect part of a lower return with investments like corporate bonds and property funds. Then you control the proportion that is in highly non-volatile pieces, instead of the FSA and the insurance company.

Many Friends Provident endowments have the option to switch to unit linked funds. A fund switch can by far be the best and cheapest option in many cases. There are some very good performing FP funds which are exceeding the typical target growth rate required.
