Sorry if this is a bit disgusting
We have a loo that is in it's own tiny room which is only about 6 inches wider on each side of the loo seat. The men folk in this house must have pretty bad aim when they wee because I have noticed that the wallpaper behind and on the sides nearest the back wall is all spattered and starting to bubble up.
I've tried washing the walls down with disinfectant, cif cream and sugar soap but I can't make it look any better. I don't want to strip the wall paper off unless I really have too, and I don't think repainting will look any better (plus paint is pricey nowadays).
Any idea what might clean the walls up better please?

Why do you think it's just the menfolk in your house? All men folk have bad aim ;-) !
Umm... I was going to suggest bread for cleaning wallpaper, but I think you might need something more hard core here. I do think that when you do get it cleaned & dried, you need to look at something that stops the wee getting to the wallpaper in future, I'm thinking varnishing the wallpaper or fixing perspex over the top...
I think the reason the wallpaper is bubbling is that it's getting moisture behind it, so I don't think paint would be so bad - I've never found it as bad, though I've not has such small loos for the problem to arise. So getting the paper off & painting with something like kitchen & bathroom paint, that's designed to cope with damp conditions might do the trick. But I appreciate you don't want to spend the money unless you have to!0 -
It might not be wee, it could just be damp because there isn't much room for the air to circulate behind the toilet? Could you pop one of those small disposable dehumidifiers behind it to see if that helps? I know we always get a lot of condensation on our loo pipe. As for cleaning it - I don't know really. I would clean with sugar soap and leave to dry then try the dehumidifier. My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

I know it would cost a bit more but could you remove the wall paper and put tiles up yourself? Then you can just wipe it clean in future and maybe as it will be more obvious when they pee on it they'll aim better!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

I sprayed it with bleach and tried wiping it down but no improvement. I think I will have to strip the paper off.
I am terrible at tiling so I will have to get the washable paint - I think I will also paint directly onto the plaster instead of papering the wall again, I can't hang paper either!0 -
I'd remove the wallpaper and tile that area!... Men are disgusting.. I make my 13 y/o sit to pee as he gets distracted and gets it everywhere.. dirty child! I make him clean any spillages too

A brightly coloured ping pong ball in the loo worked wonders for my men in order to direct their aim!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
Urgh. I am always wary in no shoe households with men or more particularly boys for this reason, and often stay a short time or cross my legs and hope for just this reason.
I i think the getting them to sit is a great idea, as long as its healthy....i don't know about men but i do know its not great for women to 'hover' above instead of sit or i think squat low.
Washable paint and a cleaning routine for the walls performed by the males in the family seems in order.0 -
Secure the ballcock so the bowl won't refill and flush the water. Paint a target, or a couple of flies onto the ceramic, leave to dry.
Hey presto, something to aim at! I would also vote for tiling it - you can get seconds fairly cheaply, and it's not as difficult as you think. Force them to wipe it down too. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

An old method to clean stains from wallpaper was to make a stiff dough with flour & water (or pipeclay is better if you can get it) and spread it thinly over the affected area and leave to 'cure' for at least 24 hours then peel it away gently taking (hopefully) the stain with it.
For a cheap prevention of splashes until you decide what to do permenantly is to use cling film to cover the area.0 -
What about acrylic? You can use no nails to stick it up, very easily washed so hygenic and pretty reasonable?
