JERSEY Potatoes - Are we being ripped off?

I have always loved Jersey new potatoes but this year what are being sold in Tescos I am doubtful are real Jersey Royals.
The skins are not the same, they used to just fall off when touched by your fingers. The taste is definately not the Jersey potatoes I remember.
ARE WE BEING CONNED?? I will not buy them again.

I started a thread on this some weeks ago, so you're not alone in your view. As far as I am concerned the Jersey potatoes sold today have entirely lost the flavour that once made them buying. It's not the supermarkets' fault - it's the fault of the growers.0

It's not the supermarkets' fault - it's the fault of the growers.
Personally I would blame the supermarkets - they're the ones who dictate what the growers grow, because they're the ones who buy it and control the prices. I'd imagine they want high volume and low cost, which has affected the types of potato that the growers plant. Getting decent Jersey royals probably means waiting an extra couple of weeks and getting a lower crop overall, which means higher prices. If the supermarkets will only pay 'x' then the growers will pick the varieties of potato that fill those requirements, and flavour gets sacrificed.0 -
Just read an early thread on Jersey potatoes which related to the past use of seaweed on the soil. Probably this could be the reason for the different taste !
I for one will not buy Jersey Royals again, shame really as they were great potatoes. Probably the supermarkets are too blame in driving down the farmer's prices and the use of seaweed has become too expensive.
The shelves in the supermarket this week were full of Jersey Royals all at reduced prices - probably not selling like in the past.
Maybe the supermarkets will take notice and change their approach - wishful thinking!!!!0 -
same here will not buy again even at half price. Total disappointment and a waste of my lovingly made mint sauce. Was drooling and so looking forward to them but almost spat out the first bite.Slimming World at target0

I'd suggest getting them from a green grocers or market and see if you can taste a difference.0

I got mine beautiful ones in my Riverford box, worth every penny and delicious with butter and a generous wodge of Waitrose Frozen parsley.
They taste divine.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Try looking for the ones that are sold loose and unwashed, covered in soil. The skin scrapes off those perfectly - you can't scrape the ready-washed ones properly, and the skin is always papery and tough when cooked in a Jersey Royal.
The unwashed ones have that proper taste as well!0 -
Bought these reduced once. Never again. Disgusting things!0

I think people need to get off their Supermarket thing and see where they can buy them where they have all the taste. My Riverford does it for me.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Just had my Riverford Jersey Pots today, with their bunched carrots too. They were lovely. Only just started using Riverford, but they certainly are quality products.0
