claiming mileage and tax

first time posting and im interested about tax and mileage (reading bits and pieces but im a bit unclear)

I work for a construction company and im based at the head office.

using my own car when i have to go to site, i claim miles from head office to building sites and back to head office.

Last year i did about 1200 miles, so far this year i have done nearly 1000miles

The mileage allowance i can claim is 25p a mile.

can someone point me in the right direction or give advice if i can claim tax back (im reading bits on 40p mile allowance).

The mileage allowance rates allowed by HMRC are 40p a mile for the first 10,000 miles, 25p thereafter.

If your employer is reimbursing you at 25p per mile. You can claim a tax deduction for

    (0.4-0.25) x 1200 = £180
  • Excellent,

for that can i claim back previous years?

also how do i go about it?
    thanks

  • I believe you can backdate your claim for 6 years but HMRC will advise.

Your employer should be paing you 40p per mile IMHO.

    :)

  • Would this also be the case for a supply teacher? One day I could be at a school a mile away & then like last week, be at a school 20 miles away. The agency I work for is 6 miles away from my home
I do whatever my rice krispies tell me to

Contact your tax office and just ask for a form to be sent out - you will need 1 for each tax year you want to claim for (I think you can download a form for the current tax year on the internet). I use my own car with a car allowance and my company pay 27p per mile. I thought I was claiming the 13p difference but it was actually tax relief on the difference.....but it is better in my pocket!!
