Broker keeps searching my credit file

Last month, i went to see a mortgage broker and he said he would check nationwide and halifax for mortgage products for me as my income includes tax credits etc and other lenders do not take this in to account. Within 4 hours that same day he rang me back and said Nationwide would not lend enough but Halifax would and had a mortgage in principle for me, to which i have not taken up.

However, i have just viewed my credit report with Experian and there are loads of entries from Santander, Bank of scotland, Lloyds, Nationwide and Halifax. Some are duplicate entries and some have been made two weeks after my appointment with the broker. One shows Halifax inputted a mortgage amount with a repayment term of 30 months!!! There is even one showing from 3 days ago!

What do i do as i was told only two searches would be made and now my credit rating is showing as fair with a big red warning saying i have had too many searches done. Shall i contact the broker or each individual bank? Are they allowed to keep searching when i dont want them to?

Many thanks in advance for any advice

Check with the broker and make sure they stop, however the searches are still there. I think all you can do is apply for a notice of correction/ explanation to be added onto your credit files with the CRAs.

Are all of these actual credit searches or identity checks?

Are you also using comparison sites to research mortgage products?

  • They are showing as both mortgage and enquiry searches. Never used a comparison site for mortgages and have a total of 18 searches. Im going to ring the broker up and see what the heck is going on.

Sounds like you have hit a trainee broker maybe. It sounds like the broker is checking with all the lenders, although it is good but it should not be done through the systems.

Good brokers have good connections with the underwriter/lenders. They would usually know the deals available to their clients in current climate. So your broker should have only hand picked a couple of lenders that are best suited to your situation and on your approval should have produced an AIP.

I think usually the brokers would contact the underwriter and double check with them if the case looks something they can approve and only than they would request for an AIP.

Call yours up and ask'em to stop messing about - 18 records are a big number in 1 month and all to do with Mortgage.

I've come accross this recently where a broker wanted to see what the client was up to after not comming back to him as he suspected the client was giving fraudulent info using another broker, for example payslips off the internet, so the original broker was searching files later to try and find out where client had gone so he could later dobb the clients (and the broker he's in competition with) in the mire.

So how does a broker "search the files later"? all a broker could see would be their own AIP's unless they had access to the clients credit data?
