The sum of all the digits used in the series of numbers from 1 to 12 inclusive is 51:
    i.e. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + (1 + 0) + (1 + 1) + (1 + 2) = 51
The sum of all the digits used in the series of numbers from 1,020 to 1,022 inclusive is 12:
    i.e. (1 + 0 + 2 + 0) + (1 + 0 + 2+ 1) + (1 + 0 + 2 + 2) = 12
What is the sum of all the digits used in the numbers from 1 to 1,000,000 inclusive?

(In addition to providing the correct answer, you must also show the method that you used to calculate the sum.)

This seems quite relevant to me! so I simply added 1 through 9 = 45 What do you think, could it be THAT simple???

I know it says in the competition rules that there are no trick questions but, could the answer be 2!
In the examples given they refer to the 'series' of numbers however in the actual question they ask for the digits used in the numbers used from 1 to 1,000,000. So 1+1+0+0+0+0+0+0=2
Does that sound too simple though!

I really don't think it's a trick question. As well as them saying no trick questions, the previous questions all require quite a bit of working out.

    I agree with Hamster ;)

    Answer 27000001

    Look at range 1 - 999999
    1000000 combinations. 6 digits.
Av of numbers 1-9 is 4.5
    Total for range = 1000000*6*4.5=27000000
Now add on 1 for "1000000"

    Answer 27000001

Also confirmed by brute force using Excel & VBA
