Rum babas

My mum was talking the other day about how much she loved rum babas but she hasn't seen them in shops for years. It's her birthday coming up so I thought I would try and find some for her.

From what I've found on google, I've found one website which sells a small jar for about £9 (plus whatever delivery is) which seems like quite a lot for what seemed like a small amount
Waitrose also sell them for about £2 but I read some reviews saying they weren't that nice. Has anyone experienced them?

I've never even heard of them so I don't know they're supposed to look/taste like :D Any other recommendations on where to look?

Sainsbury have been stocking the "Bonne Maman" brand Rum Baba recently, which is quite acceptable and with a decent tot of rum in each one. :)

Basically, they are like a small doughnut in a sweet rum sauce with a topping. :)

That's the same brand Waitrose has, good to know someone likes them :D
Will look in my local Waitrose and Sainsburies and hopefully one of them will have some in stock :)

This is what they looked like: http://myfrenchcountryhome.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/dinner-for-french-men-rum-baba.html (scroll to the first photo) - although in shops they looked a bit sadder.

You could make them yourself - and they might look like that picture that way .. and not be soggy/stale/wonky.

You've never seen me try to cook ;)
  • Saw the hairy bikers the other day, looked quite easy, might be worth a try?

  • This post took me back almost 50 years to my first visit to London. We went in a coffee bar in Kensington and ordered a rum baba and coffee and felt so grown up and decadent! I actually thought it was the worst thing I had ever tasted and have never been tempted by one since!! Perhaps it's time I tried another!

  • I've had a hankering for a rum baba for yonks, and when I saw them featured on The Great British Bake Off recently I was determined to locate some, and bought some of these Bon Maman ones from Sainsburys. I couldn't wait to try them in the hope they would be just like the delicious ones I used to choose from restaurant sweet trolleys in the '70s, so I was very disappointed to find they tasted revolting; unpleasantly alcohol-y and with nasty sickly cream. My hub and I couldn't eat them and they went in the bin.
  • I saw those on the Bake Off tv show too - never had one.

I notice they seemed to used some special kind of tin to make them?

How about you find some tins and buy her a bottle of rum, to make her own?

The ones I recall from 60s/70s & sweet trollies (you never see those now do you?) were only soaked in sugar syrup I think, I cannot recall rum taste at all - maybe I had a kid's version?

  • You know, I had the same thought - although I'm sure they were called rum babas, I don't remember them tasting of rum at all!
