Remove Charge from deeds

My husband and I have just paid off out mortgage. Our house is in Northern Ireland. We've been told that in order for the building society (Santander) to release the deeds, we will have to employ a sollicitor.This will obviously incur a charge which we are keen to avoid. Can we download and complete the necessary paperwork ourselves?
