Virgin Media late payment

Hi all
I recently got Virgin Media to change the status of a payment on my credit report from "late" to "up to date" (as I had a direct debit set up at the time so the late payment wasn't my fault). This was by emailing through Equifax, which I signed up to a free monthly trial for.
I cancelled Equifax yesterday to avoid paying a monthly fee. Today I get an email, and lo and behold, the status of the payment has been changed back to late.
I have emailed again but soon I'll lose access to the account and now I'm unsure as to what to do. I have saved the email Virgin Media sent to Equifax requesting that the payment be shown as up to date instead, but I'm left wondering whether Equifax will only change the payment status if I continue to hold an account with them?! Which seems crazy...

More likely a mess up Virgin's end?
For example, if their automatic updates to the CRAs haven't been fed the corrected data yet, so next time a monthly update is sent it has the old data in it and reverts the account status back.
Seen similar problems before when a manual update to correct an error gets undone by the automatic systems that are still reporting the old status.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

So who should I contact? Virgin Media by writing never responded, Virgin Media by telephone refused to help me. Yet when I reported the problem through Equifax they agreed the information was incorrect.
I'm worried that now my Equifax account has ended, I can't contact through them, but Virgin Media won't help when I contact directly...?Barclaycard: [STRIKE]£1042[/STRIKE] £433.41 (me) [STRIKE]£996[/STRIKE] £580 (ex-OH)

I've just joined Virgin, and my 1st direct debit is about to go out, so I think I'll take this as a renminder to check it.
Now, I also remember receiving a letter or email mentioning something like a £100 "fund" (or float or credit or something), that my outstanding amount owed can build up to.0
