Why dont you ask Martin why, when he designed the chat site, he included the opportunity to thank someone for taking the trouble to share their good fortune with others.
Its a basic human courtesy, that costs nothing and may make someone feel that they have done something to please some one else. You dont 'get' anything material for the number of thanks you get, just a very small glow of pleasure that you have done some thing to make a strangers day happier.“All you need is love.
