HELP! Clothes smell musty after washing :(

Have had a browse and done a quick search for answers on here, but it seems I have done much of what has been recommended already, but please can somebody help me with stinky clothes after a 40 deg wash ...

My washing machine is little over 2 years old. I always leave the door open after washes as well as the dispenser drawer. The drawer is also washed each week in bleach and soapy water and the jet holes above the drawer scrubbed each week with a toothbrush. I always wipe the door front after each wash and leave it wide open to dry/air. And I put soda crystals in a very hot (empty) cycle once a week for maintenance.

BUT I cannot get rid of the horrible musty smell of dark clothes when I wash on a 40 deg cycle. Clothes washed at 60 deg come out fine ...

My husband has today pulled the washing machine out and cleaned the filter again (it wasnt clogged up with debris but was full of stagnant water) and checked all the back hoses etc. All were fine. The pump seems to be working okay as my clothes are not excessively wet after spinning.

I am off to Mr T's later to buy some different washing powder/liquid to see if that has any effect but really am getting exasperated of what to try next?!! Please can anyone help.

Thanks in advance.

Mine did that so I ran a very hot wash and put white vinegar in the drawer instead of powder.

I did find that there was a lot of sludgy stuff in the fold of the rubber ring inside the washer, which I was told was conditioner.

Pull the rubber ring forward and have a look inside the crease.

Our filter doesn't have stagnant water in it. It does have water, but it is fresh. How often do you use your machine?
  • Thanks for the quick replies.

I've checked the rubber seal and it's clean, no water or gunk and no signs of mould.

I use the machine most days. I didnt think the filter should have any water left in it but on googling it seems that some do (as I said before it can't be a problem with the pump as the clothes spin properly)

Does your outlet pipe from the washer connect to the outlet pipe for the sink?

Could there be a build up in your outlet pipe, perhaps putting a couple of kettle fulls of hot water down the sink or using bic of soda and vinegar down it.

    Another vote for vinegar.
    Illegitimi non carborundum.
  • Next door had a similar problem with a brand new machine and it was the angle the waste pipe was at. The waste water was effectively running back into the machine.

    Hope this helps:eek:
  • Thanks again for your suggestions. Hubby has the machine out again to check the waste pipes for correct angles and blockages. I did notice last night that there is a sloshing sound when I turn the (empty) drum so can only presume that not all the water is emptying properly. Will report back!

I think Rachmca hit the nail on the head - after careful checking it would seem that the washing machine had got moved along a bit on the kitchen floor after recent renovation works and wasn't level on the ground anymore, it is level now and three washloads later the smell has disappeared! :j

Thanks everyone for all your help, fingers crossed the problem has been solved :T
