Defaults dates???

I recently obtained a copy of my credit report that lists a defaulted account with HFC bank and an outstanding balance of £92. I last made a payment to this account in August 2006. I contacted HFC who told me that they sold the debt to a DCA in 2008 who contacted me in 2010 at which time I settled this debt.
I am confused as to what date my account was defaulted? why a balance of 92 is still shown and why it is not noted on my credit report that the account is now settled? The last entry was in june 2012 saying that i still had the £92 outstanding. HFC bank told me to write to them explaining the problem but I don't want to do this until I am more 'in the know' about default rules and selling on debts.
Sorry if this post is long... I would really appreciate any advice!
Thanks!

    contact the agency you paid
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

On your credit file there will be a default date entry - what date is this?
Usually you would expect it to be within approx 6months of when you stopped paying / started missing payments regularly.

On your credit file - is it in the name of the original creditor, the name of the debt collector you paid? or the name of a different debt collector? - all are possible.

The DCA you contacted in 2008 and paid - do you have any written evidence that it was paid? a letter from them followed by proof of a payment for example? or a letter from them to confirm it was paid?

When a debt is sold, sometimes it stays on file in the original creditor name, and if you pay a DCA they should inform the creditor to update your report. Other times the entry from the creditor will be removed and an identical entry from the debt collector added (they should use the same default date as the original entry but do not always).

Defaults stay on file for 6years from the date of default as entered on the credit file.

  • Tixy... The credit file only lists the original creditor; HFC bank. On my equifax credit report default date is nov 2006 and on my Experian one it's 2006 however both list an outstanding balance of £92. On the Experian one also it has listed that I've missed the payment every month since nov 2006 whereas the equifax one simply stops at nov 2006.. Is this just a difference with their recording systems?
I can't find my letter from the DCA but I do have proof of payment and HFC bank told me on the phone tht thy had been informed of a payment in 2010.
Hopefully the default will go off my file in nov 2012? But do you think I need to pay the 92 just to settle it all?
    Thank-you!!
