Help with Tax

Hello.
I am completely at a loss when it comes to tax. Basically this post is just to ask what i can do to get a lower tax rate.

I work as a football coach and at the moment get paid by two seperate companies even though all the work is done for the same club.

I came back to england in june last year after spending 2 years working in the USA.

Both my monthly pay slips that I get each month have BR as a tax code.

I filled in the form sent by the tax man to make sure I was in the correct band, not sure if I did it right. Haven't heard anything back, filled it in about 2 and a half months ago I think.

My monthly wages vary depending on how many hours I do and what sort of work it is. (in a way the coaching i do could be classed as freelance as i can take as much or as little as i get offered.)

Any help in getting a tax refund and how to procede would be much appreciated.

Thanks

  • I'm no tax expert but if I were you , I'd go to your employers wage office/ or your tax office take some details with you, wageslip, etc. and ask them if they have your proper tax code.
I don't know what BR means but I'm sure mse tax expert will be along shortly if not your employer or the tax office should sort it out.

BR means "basic rate " this means you are being taxed at 22% on all your earnings and receiving none tax free. You say you have returned forms to the tax office but do not say which ones - as you have returned from USA you will need to complete a form P86. If you need to complete a tax return then that should be completed, however if you do not need a tax return then you will be able to get a rfund of your tax by sending a form P86, both your 2006-7 P60`s (which you should get during April) and a covering letter explaining that they are your only jobs since arriving back in UK in June. Even while you are waiting for your P60`s ...write to your tax office (could be 2 offices as you are paid by 2 employers) and let them know details of both your jobs, when you started, your earnings, which job is your main job and your works/payroll numbers. You will then be issued with a correct tax code. Usually tax codes are corrected in April anyway..but this is not the case if you are on BR incorrectly.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
