Someone was asking about working for M&S...

...in a previous post. It wouldn't let me post a reply on there so I'm starting this thread so I can try to answer some of your questions.
I work at M&S currently so have up to date information.
M&S payrates start at £5.60/hr for a customer assistant, this rises to £5.85 after your training and successful completion of a 'performance record' to see how you have got on with the training.
Certain stores have a 'location premium' and if you work at one of those then your 'pnce per hour' increases.
New staff get time and a half for working on Sundays.
You don't need experience, a willingness to work and learn is all that is required.
There are quite a lot of staff discounts and perks, some people use loads of them, others hardly any as it all depends on your personal situation.
Some of the perks include:
20% staff discount card, this is now unlimited.
Staff shop where you can buy reduced food and clothes.
Staff canteen (depends how big the store is)
Various offers on healthcare, eyecare, BUPA, dentists etc.
4 weeks holiday a year which goes up to 5 weeks after 2 years service.
It is a good company to work for as far as retail goes. From the sounds of what I have heard from people that work in other shops.
If you have good managers then it can be such a pleasure to work there but when you have a bad one then you can dread going into work but I would say that would be the same for most places.

Hi , thanks for the info, I posted the initial thread as we are soon to have a new M & S opening near us soon. My OH has not worked for 13 years as she wanted to be a full time mum but now the youngest is starting full time school soon, she is keen to enter employment again but is understandably nervous. Any advice on what the interview is like with M & S .Thanks0

The interviews have changed from what they used to be when I first started there. It might be different for a new store, it might just be a one on one with a manager or it could be you have to interact with a few others to show that you can deal with people as ultimately you would be working with customers.0

After dealing with 2 children 24/7 for 13 yrs I'm sure the adults won't be a problem for her. Thanks for all your info0

No problem. Happy to help, oops that is another shops slogan!

Any more questions about working at M&S, feel free to ask.:)0
