5 year work checkable history - why?

I saw a job I wanted to apply for, the only problem being that I dont have a 5 year work history as I was made redundant in 2008 and from then until the end of 2009 I did four temp jobs with gaps of 2 weeks to 5 months in between. For some of those gaps I signed on but I believe there was at least a month when I did'nt.

I'm just wondering why some employers require this and whether there is anything I can do? surely they could crb check me to check I have'nt been in prison!

Thanks

just be honest. write down the dates that you worked, (and the temp agency that employed you), the dates that you signed on, and the brief period that you did neither.

I think asking for a "5 year checkable work history" is really them just making a poitn saying theta they don't want people that have been doing nothing for long periods of time.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a job offer from an airline and they wanted five years checkable to ensure I had not been a terrorist away somewhere engaging in terrorist training! I'm serious - it's standard in that industry.
Banks use it a lot too as part of anti fraud measures.

The way to try to remedy this is to write down the dates you did the temporary jobs. For the month you weren't working say unemployed seeking work. I've got a few periods of unemployment but on my CV, I've put the dates and said unemployed actively seeking work in name of town. If I apply for any jobs where they have to be strict, I'll say in the part where you have to give further information that I can provide addresses and phone numbers of the jobcentres I've been registered with. A couple of places I've worked for no longer exist.
