Natwest Issues

I wonder if anyone with a bit more knowledge than me could advise on the current issues with Natwest?

I was due to be paid today and that's not showing in my account, not a real problem for me as I still have some money left over for the month which is showing in the account, so presumably I will be able to access.

My question is more to do with the payments that are due to come out - Much of my debt is with Natwest, so frankly they can swing if they get funny about not being paid. It's their own problem if they can't take the direct debits, the money IS there.

However, what about other things? My mobile phone bill, my loan with Tesco bank, my car insurance etc. Obviously I can't see if these payments have come out of my account, so I don't know what will happen if they haven't been? Will I get late payment markers against my name? I've tried to pay my Nationwide card using my Natwest Online banking - can't. If I ring Nationwide to make a debit card payment will it come out? I've tried transferring money from one account to another - can't.

I'm mainly concerned about the late payment markers, as I've never had one of those before and I've been really careful the last two years to reduce my debt without defaulting. Does anyone know what the situation is?

Apparently if you take a wage slip down and they can see you usually have your wages paid into your NAtwest Account, they're able to "sub" you some of your money.

If you have an account with another bank, you could take out cash from Natwest, deposit with your other bank, call the companies who DD's are supposed to be going to, explain they come from a Natwest account, so through no fault of yours they may not be able to collect the DD, they may arrange a date they can recall for the DD and not charge you, if not, just pay with your debit card or by bank transfer.

IF you get a DD returned fee from the other lender demand that NAtwest reimburse it.
  • Thanks for the info.

I haven't had my payslip yet (assume it will be at home with the post later when I get in). I also don't have an account with any other bank which I can transfer the money to.

Like I say, it's not so much the returned fee or the money that I'm bothered about - I hardly spend any money on myself and I have enough to get by without accessing my wages this month. I just don't want late payments against my name on my credit file.

Natwest's internal Bank Transfer system is down too. So I can't transfer out of my accounts, it would have to be a cash payment. As I do all of my banking online (have no statements for my CCs) I can't go into their bank and make the payment, the only option for me would be to pay by debit card over the phone, but that's only IF Natwest are allowing payments out from debit cards. They seemed to be yesterday as I did some grocery shopping without any problems and although my balance didn't update my 'available balance' did update.

Being stuck at work isn't helping. You can guarantee by the time I'm finished here the call centres for the other banks will be closed! D'oh!

Oh well, I guess what will be will be - and if needs be I can get the late payments removed if they do show up. It's just more hassle! Bl**dy banks!

Natwest have a statement about the situation on their website. Apparently no customers will permanently lose out as a result and you can speak to the phone or branch staff for more information. Might be better asking the questions direct to Natwest...
  • I would go to the branch but there's not one nearby because I'm at work. I've tried their telephone banking and the recorded message instructs me to call back this afternoon if I'm calling regarding the payment problems.

However, I just rang Orange to try and pay my bill with my debit card, and Orange told me that I don't have an outstanding balance. Presumably that means the payment has been taken. I will ring my insurance and Tesco loan on my lunch break and see if the same can be said for them.

As far as I know, the issues are related to transactions not being posted properly and balances not showing as accurate.

I don't believe there is any problem in payments actually being received and sent, just them showing up properly.

I wouldn't worry tbh. I am also a Natwest personal and business customer and it's been a lot of fun and games here at the office today!

For the future you should arrange your direct debits and standing orders to come out of your account a good few days after the normal date your salary goes in.
Standing orders you can change yourself but with direct debits you need to speak to the suppliers that are taking money if they will move the date a few days.
