  • My Dad isn't a party person, for his 60th we had a surprise dinner party. His friend took him to the pub for the afternoon, Mum invited friends + family he hadn't seen for a while (and hid a load of booze in the garage), my brother and I cooked for about 12-15 people.

How about a race night? You can buy a kit online for £10ish I think which has details of how to run it, you then play the dvd of the races. You could do this in the house so no cost of venue, and perhaps do a 'pot luck supper' where you say on invite that no gifts are needed, but it would be appreciated if everyone brought a dish of food to be shared etc?
