As a purchaser and a breeder of cavalier spaniels i would recomend that you contact the kennel club, as they have a list of reputable breeders and also on that list maybe breeders who have pups or contact some of the breeders who may recomend someone if they dont have any, also it is a good idea to buy from a home bred seller rather than a kennel as you should be able to see either both parents or at least the puppys mum. You dont say where you are in the country but there maybe a club for weimaraner owners, you could try searching on google for clubs, they could possible recomend someone or at least point you in the right direction.

I have to second gk172's advice and go through the breed clubhttp://www.weimaranerclubofgreatbritain.org.uk/

To be honest if cost is an issue for you then maybe you shouldnt be looking for a pup. Like everything in this world, you get what you pay for and if you want a well bred pup from a reputable breeder then you are going to have to pay.

There again you can always go give your money to a puppy farmer, where the dogs are kept in inhumane conditions, bred to death, no family history, no careful breeding programes, no health checks, no socialisation and no back up, support and advice when things dont work out

Off my high horse now
• I am not concerned with the price, but i would like to get what i pay for, and not some half breed as i am not a dog expert and it will be my first purchase.

It wont do any harm to go read some books and i dont mean that in a bad way, certain breeds are prone to differant things also there is breed standards, what to look for in a healthy puppy, checking its jaw line to see if thats acceptable, i dont know much about weimaraners but i found it knowledable when buying my cavaliers to know about the jaw line and that they could suffer with thier long heavy ears and could be prone to heart murmours also labradors can be prone to hip displacia, springer spaniels which i also have as puppies have a very low bordom threshold and chewed anything and everything and one also wriped off my bathroom wallpaper and labradors too are very distructive, so before buying find out if there are any special requirements/needs for your new puppy it might save you in the long run.

PS The price can indicate also the breeding lines ie it could have been club champion which would put the price up, also meaning it should be closest to the breed standards which is handy especially if bringin into a house with children you need to know and depend on what you have purchased.

I'd agree that your always wiser to go a view the puppies from a reputable breeder in their own enviroment with mum you should also be able to see other relatives and offspring bred by them that they will no doubt have kept for show purposes and be able to see for your self the breed type and temperament.

If dad isnt available I can see no problem with the breeder putting you in touch with the owner of him for you to go and see also, any decent breeder will go out of their way to help you and put you at your ease with your concerns and purchasing decisions.

I'd recommend a breed club to be honest, i'm not saying there is anything wrong with the kennel club, however any joe bloggs can and do advertise their pups for sale with them. A breed club will be able to put you in touch with a variety of breeders around the country and it would be wise for you to go and have a look, Just becuse a breeder is nearby doesnt neccessaraily mean that its the one you should choose, I know many people that have travelled the length and bredth of the country for the right puppy for them.

I'd recommend you get a book either way to read and have a good look at make yourself aware of everything you need to know about the breed, go to dog shows and meet the breeders and see their dogs. You can get all the info about up coming dog shows from a breed club or by looking through the dog world or our dogs newspapers.

I'd never recommend you buy a puppy from someone down the road for instance thats just mated up their b!tch with a friends dog. At most, when the purchase is complete their job is done, with a bonafide breeder you'll find that they are there for you every step of the way and will be there for you to give help and guidance throughout the life of your pet.

Good luck x

I found this site you may like to read through. Im a member of a similier site for cocker spaniels and I find the help, advice and knowledge invaluable http://www.weimaranerforum.org/index.php

I also second the advice that you read up as much as you can on the breed and talk to other owners. They are a member of the gun dog group and are highly intelligent and need lots of human companionship (they dont handle being left all day well) and lots of stimulation. They do have health problems as most pedigree dogs do but a good breeder would have researched his/her breeding stock and lessened the risks.

As rushnowt says being KC registered isnt a guarentee of anything. As long as the parents are KC registered then resulting pups can be, but its no guarentee that the breeder knew his/her stuff. My last pup was KC registered but unfortunately he was the result of commercial breeding and he died very young from congenitive heart failure:( (hence my rather strong feelings on puppy farmers) The breed club is the way to go. Reputable breeders breed for the good of the breed and not for commercial reasons so dont churn out litters and its quite common to be interviewed as a potential owner and if accepted put on a waiting list.

Good luck in your search

From what I can gather about the breed they are very intelligent, have a lot of energy, need a lot of excercise and as a breed are more likely to suffer from Seperation Anxiety. People don't recommend them as a first dog.

This thread on a a dog rescue site gives a little bit of information about the breed and where to find out more information: http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=65915&hl=weimaraner

Have you thought about a rescue dog? Pups come in all the time and need homes. The rescue will help to make sure that the dog is the right one, and will help you settle the dog in to the home by giving you advice.

http://www.weimaranerclubofgreatbritain.org.uk/ are a rescue for weimaraner's and they have a lot of information on the breed on their website and some puppies needing homes.

Apologies if you already know about the breed and the characteristics.

(and apologies for my spelling!)

I agree with what your saying kc registered is not enough but the kennel club do a seperate list of recomended breeders who pay to go on this list and the kennel club charge you per list, this is the way we went, we based in glasgow drove through to edingburgh (scottish kennel club) went into the office and spoke to them, they confirmed about the list and its only people who meet there criteria that is on the list, so came back hoem and phoned round then travelled to linlithgow to get a pup and saw mum and dad, we also went back to the same breeder for another pup and managed to get pick of the little when the pups were 2-3 weeks old and was welcomed out anytime and told to call anytime. But do remember some people use a stud dog and father may not bee seen which isnt that bad but i would recomend you have to see mum, go visit a few get the feel you should be able to feel if they are in it for the money or if they are responsable. We were home breeders, i had 2 ladies and 1 male and bred them now and again along with the springer lady (hubbys). I came home one day to find a letter in my post box thanking me for selling them such a nice/good pup and it turned out i had sold the pup a few years back and we also got a lots of folk had seen or know a puip and came to us, so sometimes word of mouth can be good too but you need to hear it from people you either know or trust (breed clubs)

hi just my opinion, use all the information the others have given you, use the kennel club to help track down breeders, go and see the pups as early as you can, (nothing quite like seeing pups with mum at just a couple of weeks) i got my pup (golden retriever) from a breeder who was quite happy for us to go and see the pups several times. we saw the mum the dad and the grand parents of our puppy, which was lovely. read up as much as you can and enjoy oyur pup as much as you can. i'm not being much help really but i hope you find the pup your looking for.
life is what you make it. . . a bit like playdough. just don't squeeze it to hard!
