New user advice please - equidebt

Hi all,
Aktiv Kapital have been collecting a debt from me for a defaulted HP car purchase i made with my ex-husband. Car was reposessed in 2000.

In June 2010 I wrote to them with a sample letter and £1asking for details of the account and stopped the direct debit payments of £25 a month

I received the signed agreement and total figure now owed of approx £8000 but no payment schedule or any details of payments made. I figured this did not contain the "prescribed terms" and wrote back telling them so.

I received a reply in October 2010 saying" On the basis that you assert the documents are not compliant we assume you are refusing to make payments towards your debt.Under the circumstances we can not see any reason why our collection efforts against you should not continue"

Foolishly, i did nothing after that letter.

Today, 2 years on, I have received a letter from Equidebt to collect £8000 acting for Aktiv Kapital with 7 days to respond.
My question is, do I start from scratch again by sending the £1 for the credit agreement etc?? or do I write to them detailing correspondence with Aktiv.

I do owe a debt but i want to know how the £8000 figure has been reached and how much i have already paid.I have no paperwork of my own but from memory i believe the total including interest was about £5000 in 2000

Thanks for reading. Any advice would be appreciated.
