Debts from 1995, to pay or not to pay?

I have just had a letter today from Aktiv Kapital (UK) Ltd
They're wanting payment for a debt from 12yrs ago (1995) of nearly £700
When I phoned them they said they have 4 debts all from 1995 totaling just under £2000 with:
DFS
Dixon Store Group
Homestarters
Burtons
I haven't paid or heard anything from these companies since 1998 when I moved as I couldn't afford to pay them what they wanted (made an offer of £10pm) & all defaulted in 1998.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that after 6 years, if you've made no acknowledge of the debt (settlement or payments) that the debt is voided or something.
Anyone with any helpful advice, as the girl on the phone said I still had to pay them?
