Wonga Woe

I defaulted a £400 pay day loan with Wonga. I called them a few days before the loan was due to come off and explained that my hours at work had been slashed by 50% and that I would not be able to meet the payment.
The girl I spoke with was really nice but told me that the loan would have to default first before I could work out a payment plan with them.
It did default and for the next 6 months Wonga refused every offer of a payment plan until one day I received an email at work asking if I'd be interested in paying £200 back via 5 payments of £40. i emailed straight back accepting the offer and they confirmed this again by email. This all happened last year and no payments were ever taken by Wonga and I'm ashamed to say that although I knew the payments were not coming out of my account I didn't contact them and have heards nothing from them since.
My problem is that on my experian credit file Wonga is listed as a defaulted creditor but the balance is £1332 which I presume is mounting interest.
What do I do? If I contact them after a year will they start harassing me again, I can only pay them by setting up a pay plan with them but if they don't accept this like they didn't previously then I'm back to the endless phonecalls and letters and emails from them. Help.

P.s I should also say that I now have absolutely no evidence of emails between myself and them due to system changes at work

Oh dear, this sounds like it's going to be complicated but didn't want to read and run.

Is there absolutely no way to retrieve the emails from work? Perhaps if you get in touch with the IT service they might have some way of retrieving archived emails?

If you get in touch with them again they will almost certainly start contacting you again to try to get repayment; but this is not a reason not to do it. If you ignore the situation then (as you know from your experience so far) it will only get worse and the debt will get larger.

I'm sure others will advise more about this as I am by no means an expert and am still struggling with my own finances; but as this debt is now showing as defaulted there may be a possibility that they would accept a full and final offer?

I'm going to try & have a good go at finding the emails, but I'm not holding out much hope as all our hard drives were replaced 4 months ago. I'm currently paying another 2 pay day lenders back via arranged monthly installments so I could write to Wonga suggesting that I pay them in line with the others. I ended up changing my mobile tel no to get rid of them the last time (landline is unlisted thank God & I never give out the number, I tell people I don't have landline).
  • When I could not manage to pay back my £460 loan due to losing my job I rang them the day it was due and they set up a repayment plan straight away with me they froze the interest and are happy enough as long as I am sticking to it.
