Hoping to get a mortgage in the future

I've noticed reading other threads on here that a lot of people manage to settle their debt by offering a reduced amount as a full and final settlement. I had no idea that this could be done.
Would the creditor always show it as a partial settlement or could they show it as just 'settled'? Also, if you hadn't defaulted then would settling at a reduced amount affect your credit score? For example if you were hoping get a mortgage once your debts were under control would it be a stupid idea?
