Cheapest supermarket meat!

I'm on a high protein diet and I am trying to find the cheapest meat available.

I titled this supermarket meat, as I know some people goto their local butcher, but that is no help unless you live in that area! So if you reply, it has to be easily available to everyone in a supermarket - any supermarket. Special deals and BOGOF's count.

I am also looking for mainly unprocessed meat with high protein content, so sausages, burgers, battered fish and chicken products tend to be out because of their reduced meat content and added ingredients.

You'd need to at least post the price (ideally £/kg or 100g as well and a link if poss)

To start it off, the things I have found in Tesco:

Pigs liver - 31p 258g - 12p/100g
Chicken legs fridge - £1.78 1kg - 18p/100g
Whole chicken - £3.73 1.8kg - 21p/100g
Pilchards - 99p 425g - 23p/100g
Tuna flakes - 49p 129g - 38p/100g
Tinned Minced beef and onions - 89p 392g - 41p/100g
Chicken breasts frozen - £4.49 1kg - 45p/100g
Tinned steak - £1.99 392g - 51p/100g

Anyone else have anything, please feel free to post!

You need to compare per cooked serving portion rather than per 100g.

For example a whole chicken or chicken legs you'd use a lot more than 100g of raw meat to get 100g of cooked product.

Tinned minced beef and onions are only 28% beef, but may actually be quite good value for protein at 20g of protein for 40p (assuming you'd have 1/2 a tin per serving).

A lot of frozen stuff has added water in just to complicate the maths further...
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Check out your Lidl half-price weekend offers.
They change every week and different regional offers, hence you need to check out your local store (if you have one).

Eg: my local offer this week is pork medallions @ £1.29 per 300g pack - 43p per 100g or £4.30 per kilo.
Usually limited to 6 packs per customer and for the best offers, you need to be there very early (chicken offers sell out very, very fast).

  • Also check out Aldi as they do regular meat offers. Starting today are Pork Belly joints (£3.12 per kg) and British Turkey steaks (£6.64 per kg)
