Tesco Ham rip-off...

Hi all,
Quick rant
Bought a pack of 8 slices of breaded Tesco ham last weekend which was marked at half-price - £1.70 for 8 slices. Opened it today to make sarnies for the kids - the slices are only half the size of regular slices but look like they've been folded in half in the closed pack (iyswim).
What a swizz! Anyone else noticed this? No saving effectively...half the ham for half the price...con artists!

I always buy by weight, not slice number. What is the weight?0

Even if you buy by weight they spend half of their time trying to find ways of filling everything with water. We got a joint of roasted ham which was vacuum packed. When we cut it open half a cup of water came out. The ingredients list had potato starch in it. What's that in there for - absorbing more water.0

I do this as well but also check the meat content, see if its reformed and work out from there.
Reformed meat means the meat has been broken down then rehydrated to make the ham. It can mean meat from various other parts of the animal have been included including gristle, bone marrow and so on.
There are often also other additives, not just water, things such as added bulking agents and flavorings and starch... which I don't have a clue on so don't really want it in my meat/in my body if I can help it.
It would be great if it was just the weight of the meat you'd have to be concerned about though!0 -
We bought some ham a few weeks ago off the deli counter
which was pre packed- didn't realise till we got home what rubbish it contained- it wasn't cheap either!. Back to costco
ham for us0 -
Places like B&M bargains and Iceland sell packs off ham off cuts (more chunks than slices) for around £1.89, not sure what the water content is but these packs always seem to go a lot further than the usual supermarket ones.0

I buy a similar pack from Tesco.

£2.20 for 455 grams. It usually has a chunky end piece that makes lovely soup and a number of slices. I have always been pleased with it, sometimes the whole pack is whole slices.0 -
Don't buy pre-packed, buy it from the deli counter. I bought four slices of Tesco Deli Counter Yorkshire Cured Ham yesterday which is currently £1/100g.
They are also selling Deli Counter Loose Honey Roast Ham 90p/100g and Deli Counter Loose Crumbed Ham £1.10/100g. And Tesco Counter Ham Cooked on the Bone is £1.25/100g.
These work out cheaper than their Finest range which I've been buying in the past, currently at £1.67/100g. Prefer to buy from the deli counter from now on as it saves on any waste.0 -

Double check on the labels of what your buying from the Deli quite a bit is just the same as the prepacked stuff, many types with added water (its on very small print on the tabs). I don't think there is much if anything in it price wise either as I've at times taken a packet to compare like for like. The only difference it would seem is you can order by the slide then by the pack.0 -
Prosciutto di Parma (Parma ham) - 1.99 a pack in Lidl, not formed or reformed and no additives.0
