Self employed tax-moonbeaver question

So with the BR date fast approaching next week, questions are going to be coming thick and fast
! Starting with the following...
I am aware that people in employment when the start their BR are required to pay their tax to the OR via moonbeaver. But what if the person is self employed with variable wage. i.e. taxi driver. Where deductions for fuel, cab rent etc are taken from the tax bill too.
Would the OR calculate the average tax due per month?
Try to be prepared for filling out SOA but seems like it's going to be really complicated for my boyfriend as his wage is really variable from day to day, so not sure what to put down for wage too. do they take an average as well??

I can only tell you what happened to me.
Went BR in December '11. Got a letter from HMRC a short time later saying no tax was liable for the remainder of the 10-11 tax year. A tax return still had to be completed (paper only, no option for online), but that basically nothing would be due. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
