I believe that the largest party have another day to try to form a coalition and then the others get a go.

My bet is that all attempts will fail and the Greeks will be faced with yet another election at the beginning of August, so will be unable to put in place the measures required to receive the next stage of the bailout package.

It looks like they are approaching the end game.

A worrying thought. There was an interesting article in yesterday's FT that received little coverage, comparing Greece now to the Weimar Republic, similar in this week's Charlemagne column in the Economist. I'd tend to ignore stuff like this if it was in the Daily Mail but its worrying when it's in both serious economic publications. Dangerous times.

Here's a link for the FT:

If you can't reach via link, go to google news and google Greece Weimar, should pull up link.

    And for the Economist:

It looks like ND, Pasok and one of the smaller parties are going to enter a coalition that will have 179 seats, a majority of >50. Unusually, there has been some argument about who isn't finance minister. Normally that's the plum job.

Was on the radio that it could be extended to another week to form a coalition if they can't get it sorted?

It's hard to see how that would help. It looks unlikely that SYRIZA could form a coalition. If you look them up on Wiki the parties that make up SYRIZA are a bunch of nutters.

It is quite incredible that Greece cannot do seemingly basic things such as collect taxes. I remember reading an article that they had named and shamed a number of tax evaders (who owed over €1M in tax each) but had done nothing to actually collect the tax.

I'd wager that if they could collect back taxes there would be no need for further help from the 'troika'.

Apparently, it's all the Germans fault that they do not collect their taxes.
