in Cutting tax
Hi
I am divorced and my daughter stays with me 3 nights per week. I get a discount on my council tax as I was the only adult. However my daughter has just turned 18 and is just about to finish at college after her A level exams.
Do I now pay full council tax?
Thanks

Yes I'm afraid you will. You may be able to apply for Second Adult Rebate if her circumstances dictate she is eligible.

She will continue to be disregarded until 31 October 2012 providing she meets the relevant criteria as a school/college leaver - e.g under 20 and has been at college studying for her a-levels and left college after 30 April 2012.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

If she is only with you three nights a week, where is she the other nights? If she lives somewhere else then surely you shouldn't have to lose your discount if she is resident elsewhere?

thanks for that advice CIS
Sarah, she stays with my ex-wife the other days0 -
I would assume that your ex-wife would lose her single person allowance then but you wouldn't as she doesn't live with you, only stays part of the week. I would double check with your local council but I'm sure both of you wouldn't lose the discount.

Both wouldn't lose the discount but its quite possible for the daughter to have her main home with her mother and spend 4 days at her fathers.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
