Thank to everyone on here, we have a slow cooker and breadmaker and a full freezer in the garage! And at last our grocery bill is coming down and we're eating more veg than ever. :j
It was dh's gran's freezer and I'm sure that's the reason our electricity bill is so high, it's well dodgy and old (bit like his gran, lol!). Dh wondered whether people found chest freezers a pain cos everything is piled on top of each other, or whether they're better than the upright ones? I prefer the idea of chest freezers, the upright thing we have uses more space with the drawers (which are usually stuck with frost) and it's almost impossible to open them once they're full. Same with the ones in the kitchen on the freezer bit of the fridge freezer. Anyone recommend a decent freezer brand with a good energy rating? It doesn't matter about how it looks at it'll be shoved in the garage anyway.
I also think we'll have to give up on the old plastic containers we've had which have always been a pain (finding the right lids, all different types and styles and the spare lids just to fool is, it's a nightmare!). We're hoping to 'invest' in some decent ones now that we'll be using them more often, I'm a bit scared old Lakeland cos they're dear but would folk say they'e worth the extra in the long run?
Tia, gotta go play with daughter now as the pile of toys nexxt to the pc is a hint I think.....!!! Thanks for all your advice about everything, btw!!!

It's courses for horses. You certainly get more into a chest freezer, and after awhile you get a system of what is where in your mind. You can get freezer boxes that stack inside, but it just reduces the space. If it's not frost free I can defrost one in half an hour. Takes hours to do my upright.
I wont have a chest freezer because I'm paranoid the kids would climb into it. Stupid I know, but I remember my dad frightening us half to death to stop us from climbing inside the one we had.
Personally I like the uprights, as you are only fighting to get things out of a single drawer rather than three feet down. (Could be because when I worked in catering I had to sit on the edge and still couldn't reach. I swear that was why the uniform had short skirts.)
Hope my ramblings help.Depression is well Depressing. So I go shopping. Then I realise how much debt I'm in. Then my depression hits low and so I go shopping...0 -
Omg, I never thought about the kids jumping in it!! Good point. Maybe an upright might be better.
Because we don't have much money I'm tending to spend ages scouring all the websites to find the cheapest but best, it takes ages but we've saved a lot on all sorts doing that, I know it's the done thing on here!
I really am not sure where to start with this one (poss cos 9 wk old AND 20 month old were up all last night - both had immunisations on Tuesday and are both cranky, yaaawwwwnnnn!!!). Can anyone suggest any cheap retailers or good brands? I'll let everyone know if I find any bargains while I'm at it!
Thanks, Luce x0 -
For storage containers, I just use the Tesco value ones. I like the fact that they are all the same shape and size and am planning rid of all the random ones I have lying about.
I have 2 portions ones at home, and am planning on buying some 1 portion ones later on.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

Chest freezers are better.
When you open a door on an upright all the cold air pours out the bottom as hot air rises into the freezer.
Open a door on a chest freezer and you wont get much temperature change as the heavier cold air stays in the freezer!
Also, size wise you will always be able to fit more into a chest freezer. Bosch do some very efficient and nice looking ones and many sizes. Spose it doesnt matter what it looks like if its in the garage.
If your bothered about kids getting into it you can get ones with a lockable lid!0 -
Personally I prefer an upright. We bought a frost free one (Whirlpool) and it's brilliant. it holds LOADS.Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate!0
