Waiting for a call back from them but my child has been told they wont be able to do the next step in their course.
"Lack of Confidence"
Im trying to stay calm but my bloods boiling. How can they do this.
She always completes work on time, Usually early.
Always complete's homework and projects given. Actually got told off by a tutor for handing in homework ahead of time.
Its been mentioned some of the students dont work properly in class, Rarely/Never do homework or complete projects. Yet because they have confidence they can do the next level?
Trying to stay calm, Who/Where do i complain to?
Thanks.

May be worth giving a little more detail....0

Calm down. How old is your child? If still a teenager, have you considered sitting down with her and her tutor to explore the issue? Complaining at this stage will get you nowhere.0

Agreed!Idiophreak wrote: »May be worth giving a little more detail....
What course is she doing? Is it leading to a job where you need self confidence in order to be able to make decisions for yourself, such as police work or nursing? Can you make an appointment with the college for you and your daughter to discuss this with the tutor? Ask them if they have any suggestions for helping your daughter to boost her confidence.0 -
You might want to edit the title of your thread, so that the place is not mentioned. It could be unfiar to your daughter if others see it and comment to her, or the mods might decide to remove the thread completely (they removed one last week when someone named a nursery that they were complaining about, although the complaint was different to yours).
The first step is to obtain a copy of the complaints procedure from the place. Read it through and follow that procedure. Put the complaint in writing and be clear and concise. If you are dissatisfied with the response, check the next step of the complaints procedure. It is often difficult to accelerate a complaint until you have followed each step.
You could also consider making an appointment to speak to the tutor who has refused to allow your daughter to progress. This would give you a chance to discuss the details in person, but only if you can be sure you will not lose your temper. You can then put across your case for your daughter to continue to the next level - and who knows, maybe it will give her some confidence?
My daughter is quiet and fairly shy, but is a rainbow and Brownie leader (no confidence issues there) and works with the elderly (again, no problems with confidence). Yet she never used to speak up in class. Teachers saw this as a lack of confidence, but some people are naturally quiet. They are often listeners, not talkers (although my daughter can talk the hind legs off a donkey....:rotfl:)0 -
You may find that having a candid conversation with the college about how you, they and your daughter can jointly try to overcome her (perceived) confidence issues is more productive than going in all guns blazing with a complaint.0
-
Your best bet is to try and have a conversation with the lecturer. Lecturers are put under a lot of pressure to follow specific guidelines and it may be it's a policy from further up the chain rather than something specific to the lecturer.
If that doesn't get you anywhere then drop me a PM and I may be able to assist further.0 -
Contact the College about their Complaints procedure. It will usually be on their website as well.0

This x 1000
My sister was once told she wasn't going to be allowed to do a course as they were concerned about her previous attendance (a prior year). I appealed and ended up going to a meeting with her tutor (with my sister present) - we discussed the issues and she was allowed onto the course.0 -
Firstly unless your daughter is young or has disabilities this is HER fight and I can't emphasise enough that she should deal with it (you can support, but let her deal with it).
Any complaints or appeals should be in her name.
Next question - what are her grades? If she is "top of the scale" then I don't get the confidence issue. Handing work in early doesn't mean good grades.
Secondly - Is there a practical element to the course- a placement or similar where feedback re her confidence could have been given?
Thirdly- Help her to appeal and ask for Head of Department to adjudicate, be there for support but the more you talk for her, the more you will be confirming their initial diagnosis.
End of the day no one has a right to do a course. Colleges CAN and DO choose who they beleive is right for the course if over subcribed. This can be on progress, grades, attendance, lateness or suitablity for placement/chosen profession.
If "confidence" is completely unrelated to the course or career then let her point this out.0 -
Thanks for the info, I cant give more details yet as i dont have them.
I didnt mention the course and names etc so that should keep the thread alive.
Had a chat tonight and she wishes to continue with this direction of education/career.
Im not the aggressive threaten them physically type. Never ever.
But i fail to see how dumping someone from their course will help with their confidence?
I had a look at the ofsted site after i made the original post and her course scored a 3. Satisfactory. But the quantity of students completing the course was very low and needed attention.
There maybe other reasons as some have suggested above, But so far they have failed to give her any other reason.
She has passed her stage 1 or whatever its called. Had 2 days off all year. Always arrives early to avoid the mad rush for the school on the bus route, So no risk of missing the bus because its overloaded etc. We were warned about that by a friend whose daughter went there the year before, Catch the 8:20 bus and you will be lucky to get on sometimes.
Dont have the grades so far, So thats something we need to check.
Ive not mentioned the course etc yet. So this post could apply to many people.
I posted here because of the wide variety of member to this site. I thought some will know and many may even work in this area. Some may even work at this college. I couldnt find any procedure to dispute their decision.
Soime good points above though. Thanks.
I will post back and let you all know.
Its one of those years where nothing goes right i think.
Thanks to everyone that replied.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
