£5.66 to last me two weeks...

Options
...so in order to stick to my target in the grocery challenge I need to spend £5.66 or less and there are still 2 weeks left of the month.

I do have loads of food in, not sure how long it will last but I probably have about 2 months worth if not more.

I've not been having any luck in the reduced section or in the staff shop but I am hopeful.
I have tinned fruit and frozen veg so its just the fresh stuff that I will struggle a bit on.

Also I want to make a risotto but wanted to put either chicken or sausages in it. I can buy the Cumberland sausages from Sainsburys, they are on BOGOF so I would get 16 sausages for £1.64 or I could go to M&S and buy a half price chicken there. See if I can find one for about £2.35 so that would cost me about £1.90 after discount.
If I was to buy both then the sausages would last me well into next month if I used a pack up and froze a pack but then I would only have just over £2 left for the 2 weeks!
I should probably wait until next week to make my risotto but I really fancy it, it has to be one of my favourite meals.

if you could last out for your risotto......i am sure you will injoy it more.....

being realistic.. if you have plenty of food in the freezer, and store cupboard..... your £5.66 could last you.... as long as you are carefull.....

but if you REALLY want your risotto..... i think you might get more value out of the chicken.....risotto.....plus some other meals as well......

as with the suasages..... it wouls possibly one or two meals.......

or might sound silly but is there anything at the back of the freezer you could use....

it is hard when you fancy something.....

I like gammon risotto. Mum used to to make it with the "reformed" gammon rounds when money was bad.

I've also done prawn risotto. What other things do you already have that you could use for risotto??? What about mushroom risotto?

My best advice would be if you go out at all don't take any cash with you then you can't spend any.or at least only take a quid for emergencies

my favourite risotto is on the recipe index - rosemary and onion. Yum. I actually prefer the recipes that don't use meat in them when it comes to risotto. Frozen peas are great in them :D

Go throught the freezer and make a list of meal ideas as you go - I'm sure that your 2 weeks will fill up quickly - just remember to budget for milk, bread, butter and perhaps that chicken you are longing for!

Hello everyone. Thanks for the replies. Lots of useful advice and it has got me thinking.

CTC, I am going to hold out for the risotto I think. I will probably make it next week sometime instead, I usually use about half a packet of risotto rice and that would make about 3 freezer portions. I have a portion of bacon rice in the freezer and I think I will have that today (had it a couple of days ago as well), just need to nuke it in the microwave until it is piping hot.
You haven't seen me take a chicken apart, a usual old styler would probably get 2 or 3 more portions out of the chicken that I made a couple of weeks ago.
The money will last me, I will make sure of it. In theory I don't actually need to buy any food for a good few months.

Newlywed, I've never had gammon risotto, I don't buy gammon for some reason, not sure why really as I do like it. I suppose there are many other things I like more.
One thing I don't like are mushrooms. I won't pick them out if someone has cooked with them for me but I never buy them.
I do have prawns in the freezer so I could do a risotto with them but I'm not the biggest fan of prawns. I bought them when they were on BOGOF as I fancied them at the time.

JackieO, I work in the food section so am always seeing things that I want to eat. I just love eating but really dislike cooking.
I could take out no money with me but then if I did I know that I would probably see a bargain that I would have to pass up on because of having no money on me. I may miss something in the staff shop that isn't food related or it could be anything.

    R.Mac, I could do a meatless risotto I suppose.
Milk I sometimes buy for the household as it works out cheaper with my discount, I rarely use it myself though so am not buying anymore until next month. Bread I don't really eat much, a couple of slices a week. My flatmates usually buy bread a couple of times a week. I have 4 wholemeal bread rolls in the freezer from when they were on offer and there is almost always bread in the staff shop that I could buy for 10-20p. I rarely use butter too.

Trigger2, there is always pasta in the cupboard. We buy it between us and at the moment we have a 500g bag of tricolore fusilli, almost a full 1kg bag of fusilli, 1kg bag of wholewheat fusilli and a packet of wholewheat spaghetti.

risotto just with peas? and some mint is lovely. or you could add some chopped up ham slices, if you have anything like that. veggie risottos are lovely.

I'm not a fan of peas, the only thing I eat them in now is paella really. That is a great suggestion though. I think I will do a veggie risotto with onion and peppers in it. I might get some courgette and fresh basil to put in it too.
I have no meat in, though I want to buy some sausages that are BOGOF. I'm not going to buy those value sausages for the sake of this challenge, I would rather do without.
