"If offered the position, would you accept it?"

I would say 'at this stage I am still keen on the job but as you have not offered it to me yet I would rather have an offer on the table before I say yes'0

As some one said, this is usually asked in teaching interviews, and basically by saying yes, if they offer you the job, you have to take it. You have formed a verbal contract by saying "yes, I am still a firm candidate for this post". They may still ask again once they have interviewed and offered you the post, but this is quite specific to teaching jobs. However, with the increase in applicats, they may start ruling people out like this in other areas. I think it is highly unfair, because on most jobs you need to sleep on it. I said yes once, then left before they made the decision. It took me over an hour to get home in normal traffic, so by then I had decided to turn it down!!0

More often than not that will put you closer to reject/second than accept/first where there are others on the very short list.0 -

so you should say 'yes'? then what? You have no idea what you are accpeting. If you say yes it's a verbal agreement and you are oblidged to take it, surely.
A verbal agreement is only worth the paper it is written on!
IMO of course you can accept and then rescind it especially if you dont have all the specifics of the offer and the offer should then be confirmed in writing. (Im no legal bod so an expert may contradict this but thats my view)Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0
