Shocked At The Amount Of Fat In Lidl Mince

Been taking full advantage of mince when it's been on special offer in Lidl over the last few months. I have a freezer well stocked up with the stuff.
I'm well aware then when I've purchaded that mince that it's not 'lean' so last night I thought I would gently cook the mince for 10 minutes before going to bed. I left the frying pan on an angle so all the liquid drained to one side of the pan. This morning I got a huge shock to discover what must have been almost 200mls worth of nasty fat. From now on I'm going to be doing this all the time.
The mince is great value for money and I will continue to purchase when on offer but when I cook with the stuff I know it requires a little t.l.c. first.

I always drain my cooked mince in a sieve and wash it under the tap to try and get rid of the fat.0

You shouldn't have to be surprised In theory it contains 20% fat ( I think that was what it says on it. So all mince with 20% should be the same...
I tend to buy the lean version which says it has less than 10% fat, but might be cheaper to buy the 20% mince and to spoon off the access fat...:)0 -
Unless you just don't like fat, there's no reason to avoid fatty minced beef. Any medical text book will tell you that fat doesn't turn to fat in the body. Much of the research done in the 1970s on fat, without computers can be shown to be flawed now.
There's a great series called The Men Who Made Us Fat on BBC2 9pm which started last Thursday and it busts a lot of the myths.0 -
I saw it Edwardia, and thought it was pretty interesting and yes I somewhat share what they said. But there is more to diet then fat and sugar. If you think about calories for example. Now if I leave the fat in the pan and eat it later on I consume more calories than necessary...
I lost a lot of weight over the last year, coming down from obese to healthy weight, that make me more careful now. I don't want to creep up again0 -
there is also taste, not everybody likes to eat pasta, chili con carne etc swimming in fat.0

I'm still coming to terms with this:Muzikmaster wrote: »last night I thought I would gently cook the mince for 10 minutes before going to bed.
I didn't expect him to go to bed! I thought the second part of that sentence would be "adding the onions" or "stirring in some red lentils". Did he leave the mince in the pan overnight? Did he then do something interesting with the sat-out-all-night mince, minus its fat? Am I missing something? :rotfl:They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -

^^^^ lol! :rotfl:
I did raise an eyebrow at the thought of mince sitting out all night. I figured I'd got something wrong though. Surely that's not healthy? :shocked:There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0 -
OK maybe I owe a bit of an explanation for doing this. I wanted to see the amount of fat solidify so it would be simple to just scoop out with some kitchen paper
I started to watch that programme you're on about last night but ended up falling asleep so I will continue with it tonight. I have one thing on my mind from what I did hear them going on about 'Corn Syrup'0
