Electoral Roll - How do I get on quicker?

Options
I haven't been on the electoral roll for about a year now and have moved addresses. I sent back the paperwork to my local council and they've said my records won't be updated until October!

I have my credit file and it's great other than this problem. I need to get a car loan asap for work and I know the electoral roll makes the most difference! How do I get on the electoral roll quicker? Help, please!

If you apply at this time of year (when the monthly rolling register is active) I would expect you to be registered on the electoral roll from 1 August 2012.

But from then it can often take a couple of months for that to be updated with the credit reference agencies. Which would take you to October time.

If the council meant October when it would show with the credit ref agencies that would be about right.
If they appeared to mean October until you would appear on the elec roll with them - then I would query it with them.

  • Thanks for that.

Any advice on what I can do in between? It means effectively I'm in no-mans land for around 3 months!

You could try applying without being on the electoral roll - whilst not being on it can affect your chances it doesn't mean you would definitely be declined.
As a guide it is probably most likely to be an issue if you've had credit at lots of addresses over the last few years and have not been at this address very long.. Less likely to be less of an issue if you are a homeowner at the address and have lived there a while.
Nothing to lose by trying an application.

If you are looking for an unsecured loan (rather than secured car finance), some people have reported it being less of an issue if you apply for the loan with a bank you already have active accounts with (as they've already confirmed your address by sending you items by mail).

Hi, just tell your potential lender that you're not on the electoral roll. Ask them what they need for proof of residence and take it from there.

Most lenders recognise that people don't register through timing, forgetfulness or dogma!
