    There are nearly 10 million more people here than there were in 1962, plus numerous other changes (the introduction of right to buy, the general increase in owner occupancy levels) which would not IMO help in a guesstimate of the future.

    Ah, I understand what you mean now.

    The assumptions I have an issue with are:

    1. That you can project these numbers over 50 years and have any great chance of being close to reality. Loads of things could happen (and as FTBFun pointed out did happen over the past 50 years) to favour renting or buying

    2. The renter only saves their deposit in taxable cash savings (rather than say tax free equities) & blows the lower, initial, costs of renting on coke & hookers rather than adding to their investments

    Another thing I don’t think they took into account is that that £200k would accumulate over the 50 years but they haven’t allowed for any interest on that.
