Deleted at partners request as he is worried that someone from work might see it and realise it's him. :( Thank you for your replies, they are much appreciated. Sorry if editing this way is against the rules :(

Firstly, he's on a zero hours contract - so (as you know) they do not have to give him any work at all, I'm afraid. Without sounding harsh, the fact that you have a new baby is not their problem - so the fact that they know you have child to take care of is not relevant to the situation.

Secondly - they can dismiss him. For almost any reason within the first year, as he's been there eight months already. He doesn't need to perform badly, or do anything wrong...they can just dismiss him.

And if they don't dismiss him, they just don't give him any work (hence using zero hours contracts).

I appreciate that this feels unfair, but is completely within the law. I strongly suggest that he starts looking for other work now, which isn't zero-hours based, as you're already doing...I can't see what other options you have at the moment.

Sorry that's not what you want to hear.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Seems like the company has what they want in the contract.

However, the (unwelcome) poking fun and name calling is what is known as bullying. I've no idea how he could deal with that in that particular workplace though.
